Nautical Charm: The Story of Demer Coffee

Nestled in the heart of Jung-gu district in Busan, South Korea, Demer Coffee is a quaint cafe that pays homage to the rich history of its surroundings, particularly the iconic 40-Step Stairway in Jungang-dong. Originally a path frequented by refugees during the Korean War, this historic site now stands as a bustling hub amidst a blend of modern and old buildings, embodying Busan’s contemporary narrative.

A Maritime Identity

The name “Demer,” derived from French meaning “of the sea,” perfectly encapsulates the essence of Busan as a city embraced by the ocean. Inspired by this maritime identity, the design team at design by 83 curated a warm and inviting space that harmonizes with the cafe’s name and the nostalgic atmosphere of Jungang-dong.

Crafting a Nostalgic Ambiance

Embracing an ivory palette complemented by wooden materials, cool-toned galvanized steel, translucent polycarbonate, and shades of blue, the interior design echoes the serene hues of the sea. This thoughtful selection of materials not only exudes warmth and comfort but also captures the nostalgic essence of the neighborhood.

Innovative Design Solutions

Challenged by the trapezoid-shaped space, the design team strategically utilized glass panels to create a seamless indoor-outdoor connection. Key functional elements were concentrated in diagonal sections, including a bar area where customers can interact with the barista. The remaining space was meticulously planned to ensure a relaxed and inviting atmosphere for guests.

External Appeal and Identity

The exterior design reflects professionalism and expertise, with the coffee machine strategically positioned near a large window to invite interaction with passersby. The signage, crafted from translucent polycarbonate, illuminates with blue light in the evenings, serving as both an attractive feature and a representation of the brand’s identity.

Symbolism and Timeless Design

Drawing inspiration from Busan’s bustling port, the design team opted for rust-effect paint to mirror the weathered appearance of ships, symbolizing enduring charm and relevance. This unique approach reflects the ambition to create a brand that, like the timeless vessels, stands the test of time.

In conclusion, Demer Coffee stands as a testament to design innovation and storytelling, seamlessly blending maritime charm with contemporary aesthetics to offer guests a nostalgic and inviting experience amidst the bustling streets of Jung-gu.
