Kate Kondakova’s Journey: Leaving Ukraine During the War

Kate Kondakova faced a difficult decision when Russia invaded Ukraine in February. Despite initial reluctance to leave her home in Odesa, Kondakova eventually relocated to Moldova at the urging of her company’s CEO. As the vice president of legal and finance at 3DLook, a technology firm specializing in virtual clothing try-ons, she found herself amidst the challenges of adapting to a new country amidst the chaos of war.

Relocation and Adjustment

Choosing Moldova due to its proximity to Odesa and the presence of Ukrainian friends, Kondakova embarked on what she described as a challenging period. Despite the support provided by her company, adjusting to life in a foreign country proved daunting. However, she embraced the experience as a journey, finding solace in the camaraderie of colleagues and volunteers aiding Ukrainian defenders.

Returning Home

After several months in Moldova, Kondakova decided to return to Odesa when the situation appeared calmer. Despite the quietude at home, she remains concerned for those in regions still subjected to Russian attacks. Nevertheless, she finds comfort in being with her loved ones and engaging with her colleagues, albeit mostly online.

Work and Life Amidst Uncertainty

Back in Odesa, Kondakova navigates her work-from-home routine, a familiar experience due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While acknowledging the conveniences of remote work, she values the interpersonal connections fostered in the office. Despite occasional challenges like blackouts, she appreciates the solidarity and normalcy found in shared office spaces, where colleagues gather to connect and collaborate.

Looking Ahead

As the war persists, Kondakova remains hopeful for its end, eagerly anticipating reunions with colleagues and the resumption of travel. Amidst the upheaval, she finds joy in simple pleasures like spending time with loved ones and enjoying leisurely walks by the sea. Despite the uncertainty, Kondakova’s resilience and appreciation for life’s small joys shine through, offering a glimpse into the human spirit amidst adversity.
